Georgiana Li - MSA (USA) Posted on May 14, 2009

Name: Georgiana Li

Sex: Female

Country: USA

Age: 65

Diagnosis: MSA

Beginning Treatment Date: 2009-07-22

Days:50

In 2006 Georgiana noticed that she had troubles with her balance while walking, which caused her to fall a few times. Initially she thought these troubles were caused by physical foot problems, not even considering the possibility of a neurological issue. Soon she had to use a cane to walk because she continuously felt off balance. Over the next few months she became weaker and weaker, resulting in her not being able to get out of a chair by herself and eventually in March 2007 feeling too weak to walk. A neurologist saw her and initially suspected Parkinson's. In August 2007 she visited the Parkinson's Institute in California, where the director, based on her various symptoms, gave her the diagnosis: MSA.

Before the Treatment

Georgiana  went to Tiantan Puhua Hospital for the stem cell treatment first, through 3 months treatment, however she didn't gain any positive result,so she made sure to transfer to our medical center for further treatment. When Georgiana came to our facilities in February 2009 her condition had already severely progressed. While she lost movement in her right arm and her legs very early on, the remaining strength in her left arm also decreased significantly, leaving her not able to move or control any of her limbs. Her speech was severely impaired too. While her family was able to guess her needs just by knowing her, nobody was able to actually understand what she was saying. Her voice was very weak and unclear. Also, she was not able to eat any solid food out of fear of chocking. All her food was prepared and liquefied, actually adding a lot of water to make it easier for her to swallow. Since the development of MSA she has been in severe pain, experiencing cramps throughout her whole body, in her legs, her arms, her shoulders, every major muscle region. Sometimes family members would actually have to massage her limbs during the night, in order for her to sleep.

After the Treatment

Our treatment was very successful with Georgiana. Just about a week into her treatment, she started to talk with a stronger voice and with more clarity again. People around her were able to understand what she was saying. About one week later she experienced another major improvement: she ate solid food. "I had to wait 2 years to eat Peking duck, the other day I had Peking duck for dinner!" she explained to us. Strength returned to her body. She is now able to lift her arms again and even use her hands. She is able to move her legs again as well. During physiotherapy, with help, she actually managed to stand up and walk a few steps. Most importantly though, the constant pain she was experiencing, since she developed MSA, was gone. "The first time in two years" as her daughter explains to us, "my mother is pain-free!"

Three weeks after she returned home, she was able to call us herself and to speak more clearly than before she left. She is now also able to move her neck freely which she wasn't able to do when she left. Her swallowing and ability to eat have also improved.

After the second treatment: her speech is more fluent than before; the mandibular movement has been restored to normal, no tremors in the muscles of the tongue. The muscle tension in all four limbs has decreased noticeably. Georgiana can raise her hand and touch it to her forehead and feed herself. She can walk 10 meters with assistance and her steps are longer than before. She can turn over and bend her legs and pelvis flexibly, while in bed, and can straighten and raise her legs to a 15 degree horizontal position.
